Enormous early 20th Century museum/educational cased ornithological display of Sea and Shorebirds. This case, along with another of matching size and composition formed part of Marlborough College’s collection of historical taxidermy and natural history.

 

Includes thirty birds, each with an identification number: Merganser, Smews, Black Guillemot, Razorbills, Sanderlings, Oystercatchers, Ringed Plovers, Fulmar, Murre, Puffin, Caspian Tern, Sandwich Tern, Jaeger, Knots, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Little Auk, Manx Shearwater, Black-vented Shearwater, Cape Petrel and Ruddy Turnstones.

 

Artistically mounted on green-painted ledges extending up the backboard with a gravel base, shells and seaweed. Housed in a substantial floor-standing case (7ft wide) with light-blue painted back and roof panels, glazed on three sides with a beaded frame and ebonised finish. Inscribed on the reverse ‘Art School’ (where it was displayed within the College).
